Kicking around an ex-mining town, Run down through a lack of love with f. all to be found. Sticking with the lot you've been landed with. With your eye to the hour hand is no way to live. Somebody told you to take up and leave. Suppose you did – what would you do with it? Wonder why there’s a wage in this and not something of worth, With the sun on your skin and your fingers in the earth. Could have been an engineer, could have been a counter slave. You, with your dreams boy, and her on a steady wage. Time flies when you’re having fun. I saw you on a night bus on the way back from town, Life at a stand-still, your eyes were casting around - for something. Some call it rescue, some call it running away, You can call it what you want, if it makes it happen today. Could have been a farm hand, could have been a ministers aid. Living off your dreams boy, and her steady wage, You know… Time flies when you’re having fun. 9 is for sorrow, and 5 is for joy, Go get yourself dolled up, and meet your boy. You talk of a girl who’s going to make it somewhere, Well talk to me, and let’s get you there. Tell it! Go tell your father that you've met someone - There’s a roof over a better life, they don’t build them for one. Patience is a virtue - that you can’t afford, And working here is its own reward. Time flies when you’re having fun.

Oh, where do we go from here? Oh, where do we go? Armed only with our charms And a flask of luke warm-tea, We can navigate our history. This OS map to us To help us turn our back on loss, Without you I am Compass-less. Tributaries of tears Cut through contours of concession. Oh, where’s a roman road when you need it? I took the fast train from home And in the wilds I have roamed. It takes time to track a dotted line As I hitchhike back to your heart. Oh, where do we go from here? Where do we go? For all the feathers in our caps, The creases in our maps, We’ve still much to learn. The badges we have sewn, For all the clothes that we’ve outgrown, There’s always still something needs fixing, something needs fixing. In a tent in the driving rain, oh… Where’s your sense of fun when you need it? chorus, then… It takes time, to track back to your heart. I took the wrong train from home, Now I must hitchhike back to your heart. I must hitchhike back to your heart. To your heart To young hearts Back to your heart Take me back to your heart.

I belong to the open water, To the open water I belong. Heard of a man walked upon water, But I’m not in possession of feet that strong To bear my weight upon the waves That I created in better days. I set out a ruined minor, (Under a black flag) From Ruan Minor I set out. Out in a launch with a drunken sailor, (Under a black flag) I lost my nerve and turned about Upon the decks. The albatross, Around my neck, they hung a cross – bow. And in the ‘Meantime’ I will be your captain (In a lifeboat). Bring me the great unwashed and washed up greats, I will be your captain. Bring me the bravest of the waiverers. On the shore with an eye to the water, (Under a black flag) On the water with an eye to shore. Mariner, marinate, second mate sober, (Under a black flag) I’m the wreck in the bottle beside the door. And in these mean times…

The rectors daughter, a woman who knows her own mind. I don’t trust her, as far as I can throw her but it wont stop me having a try. Vicars with their vices, and priests becoming pests: If you lay a finger on her, I’ll lay your body to rest. In the parlour, over a game of the minister’s cat, I heard you sigh: “I remember a six year old who danced with the sun in her eyes”. Just because you’re feeling burnt, don’t forget the prayers we learnt. Yet you kneel so far from me. A warning to the curates with a twinkle in their eye; Bell ringers singing psalms in praise of womankind; Vergers merging work and pleasure, tempted by another measure; If you lay a finger on her, I’ll give you something to remember. I remember! A is the absolution, B the blessed release, C the confession, D the dismissal, E for everything in between, F is for forgiveness, G for giving you up, H is for having the heart to remember the promises we made, I I remember. “The Lord is my Shepherd, I’ll not want. He makes me down to lie In pastures green; He leadeth me The quiet waters by.” I remember

On the train down to the parent’s house: The old haunts, old friends, old ways. It spurs you on to break from the past, and what you were, as you want much more. So you drive yourself to an early grave, And what for? A golden handshake and a fancy pen. Stop a sec, do you like what you see? I looked at myself, Then it came to me, By jove, it came to me. What’s the rush? If there is a time and a place for this, It’s just not now. I could think of amazing ways to waste our days but This ain’t one. Oh but you’re only young once, So why the haste? Because you’re only young once. And there’s the rub. You can spend a lifetime trying to do things correctly. Round these parts they do things dreckly. Sweep out the new ways and in with the old. Take it to heart before the mindset takes hold So quickly. Not so quickly. Then it came to me, My God, it came to me. What’s the rush? You say that if it’s not here, then you don’t know where, and you don’t know when, When I say when. What’s the rush? If there is a time and a place for this, It’s just not here or now. I could think of amazing ways to waste our days but This ain’t one. Oh but you’re only young once, So why the haste. Because you’re only young once….

Where we stand, But as lambs. And what we hold In each other’s hands. Now if you change your mind, change your mind, I’ll try to understand That you need some time. Our hopes, Our hopes and ambitions, Well did you really care now, honestly. At best, I suggest That we take some air. So, what’s next? Your guess is as good as mine. Phone a friend. Text an expert. Answers on a postcard , please. So you've had a change of heart, change of heart, And you’re in two minds. Don’t you know? You’re not the only one to blame. Chip your lip, Crack a smile, I’ll take it as a sign… that a sip from a broken cup can still taste fine. Well yes, that jacket does you no favours. With your finesse, that dress is past its prime. And your question, where next? Well, your guess is as good as mine.

In the shade of the viaduct And the engine house tumble down. The streets where your forefathers made their name Look different now. From the state of the chains wrapped around the gate - 28 years give or take. There’s talk of drilling again, But talk doesn’t put food on the plate. Here where it’s one and all, What’s stopping them? What’s stopping us? Down in the dumps, Let the radon revive you. Your father takes a pay cut again, and your sister has moved back in. I can tell from that look in your eye You know where it all went wrong. But Dad it’s 1994, You’ve got to move with the times. Here where it’s one and all, What’s stopping them? What’s stopping us? You say it’s the pits, it’s the pits, But the airs getting cleaner. Take a light to the hole in your life And shine it on the things that you love. It doesn’t matter that we don’t know what we’re out here for, We know what we’re up against. Dust down your boots boys, We can turn this around. Here where it’s one and all, What’s stopping them? What’s stopping us?

Silence speaks volumes. You could turn it down if you said you cared. Try listening between the lines… Maybe you could hear, but you’re never there. So don’t say it’s something we can both forget, You must remember what you contribute. Putting yourself in pusses boots. Sounds like you’ve got a problem, I could be your mouthpiece. Get it out your system. Put it in the context of other peoples woes. But don’t say something you’re going to regret, Affection’s never absolute! Putting yourself in pusses boots. If I could understand you, If I took the time to work you out, If I could give you what you want, Would it make the slightest difference? Putting yourself in pusses boots.

Unleash me from your hand And I will lance the light for you I'll cut a swordblade on the wind And pennant it with flight for you To signal I am yours If you will free me to be true to you Unleash me from your hand And I will mock the sky for you I'll pull the anger from the air And make the breezes sigh for you To show that I am yours If you will free me to be true to you Unleash me from your hand And I will jewel it bright for you I'll hunt the treasures of the wind And pluck them into sight for you To show that I am yours If you will free me to be true to you O, cast me from your hand That I may show my love for you And throw me to the wind That I may know my need for you All darkness on your hand I'm hooded, pinned and held by you O, give me back my wings That they may bring me back to you
